Another song written during the Orillia writing trip in January 2009, this song began its life with the first line of the song. The melody was as you hear it, but the original line was "So glad you called", since I had just had my spirits lifted by a call from home. As songwriting typically goes, the original first line of lyric was left behind in a cloud of dust as the song evolved into something very different.
The song was still unfinished when we drove to New Jersey to begin recording the album. I gambled that perhaps the only changes left to come would be lyrical changes, and recorded the piano track in New Jersey without vocal accompaniment. When I returned home and finally finished the re-write, I added a pre-chorus section that didn't originally exist in the song, so the New Jersey piano track was retired. The new piano part was recorded in my Kitchener studio, Left Side Studio, in the Spring of 2010.
lyrics
Stealing Back The Time
The sheets are cold
A note is folded by the drawer
Filled with words she’ll never get to hear him say
Her eyes still closed
He leaves the key beside the door
And she listens as he slips away
She imagines there’s an hourglass upon the shelf
In her mind she turns it over, as if to say to herself
This is just…
CHORUS:
One page more
In the diary of a fool
A fool whose years have all been stolen
What is time for?
They say forgiveness is divine
There’s no reprieve without a crime
And she’s just stealing back the time
The days grow old
The hours flow like grains of sand
‘til the glass is finally broken
So hard to hold
Like drops of water through her hands
Like words once they’ve been spoken
She pauses for a moment, for all’s been said and done
Then she waves goodbye to yesterday, ‘cause when tomorrow comes
There will be…
CHORUS
What is time for?
They say forgiveness is divine
She’s only human, by design
And she’s just stealing back the time

Singer/Songwriter/Pianist/Producer/Engineer and many more things to many more people, Allister still can't decide what he
wants to be when he grows up. His music can perhaps be described as modern folk, since it contains rich storytelling and imagery, but it might be mistaken for Smooth Jazz, Roots or AC. You decide.
Any way you describe it, Allister's music will reach deep within and satisfy...more
